FILM SCREENINGS
The Blood of a Poet (Le sang d’un poète), 1930
Directed by Jean Cocteau
Fridays, October 29, November 5, 12, and 19, 1 and 2:30 pm
The first installment in the Orphic Trilogy—a series of three films by acclaimed French avant-garde director Jean Cocteau—the groundbreaking film The Blood of a Poet is one of cinema’s great experiments. A portrait of the plight of the artist, the film uses surrealist imagery to explore the poet’s obsessions with the relationships between art and dreams, metaphor and reality, and life and death.

Free with museum admission.
Films are shown in the New Media Theater, lower level.

FILM SCREENINGS
Metropolis, 1927
Directed by Fritz Lang
Fridays, December 3 and 10, 12 and 3 pm
Perhaps one of the most famous and influential of all silent films, Metropolis takes place in 2026, when the populace is divided between workers who must live in the dark underground and the rich who enjoy a futuristic city of splendor. In this new digital restoration, the tense balance between these two societies is realized through elaborate sets and modern science fiction.

Free with museum admission.
Films are shown in the New Media Theater, lower level.

FILM SCREENINGS
The Architecture of Doom, 1991
Directed by Peter Cohen
Fridays, December 17 and 24, 12 and 3 pm
Featuring newly researched footage of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime, The Architecture of Doom captures the inner workings of the Third Reich and illuminates the Nazi aesthetic in art, architecture, and popular culture. Hitler worshipped ancient Rome and Greece and dreamed of a new golden age of classical art and monumental architecture populated by beautiful, patriotic Aryans. There was no place for so-called degenerate artists like Pablo Picasso and other modernists or for “inferior” races like Jews in his lurid fantasy. This riveting documentary shows how Hitler rose from failed artist to creator of a world of ponderous kitsch and horrifying terror.

FREE with museum admission.
Films are shown in the New Media Theater, lower level.

LECTURES
23rd Annual Hilla Rebay Lecture: Objects as Sculpture
Tuesday, November 16, 6:30 pm
Elizabeth Cowling
Honorary Fellow, History of Art, University of Edinburgh
Shortly before World War I, when Umberto Boccioni, Georges Braque, and Pablo Picasso began to sculpt objects and still-life compositions, they set in motion a revolution, the repercussions of which can still be felt in the work of many of today’s leading sculptors. Soon afterward, Marcel Duchamp launched his assault on the very foundations of art with his found-object readymades. In this year’s Hilla Rebay Lecture, Elizabeth Cowling focuses on a pivotal period in the history of modern sculpture when the object, rather than the human form, assumed the role of agent provocateur. The Hilla Rebay Lecture brings distinguished scholars to the Guggenheim Museum to examine significant issues in the theory, criticism, and history of art. This annual program is supported by the Hilla von Rebay Foundation. Free admission (no advance ticket registration).

LECTURES
Constructing Classicism in Fashion
Tuesday, December 7, 6:30 pm
Patricia Mears
Deputy Director, The Museum at FIT
Between the world wars, women such as Madeleine Vionnet dominated fashion design in Paris and New York. Charting the embrace of classicism, Patricia Mears, a renowned costume historian and style expert, discusses clothing innovations that defined fashion in the 1930s, changed the course of modern dress, and continue to influence couture today.

Tickets are $10, $7 for members and students, and are available at guggenheim.org/publicprograms.

SPLURGE ART GALLERY PRESENTS ARTIST MARIE-DANIELLE LEBLANC AND HER "LANDSCAPES AND VISTAS" COLLECTION

Leblanc transforms places into poetic worlds on a canvas
meet the artist on November 18th, 2010 AT 7-9 PM

Bucerias, Nayarit, Mexico - October 27, 2010 - Splurge Art Gallery is proud to host the first Art Show of 2010-2011 Art Year "Landscapes and Vistas" with artist Marie-Danielle Leblanc on November 18th, 2010.

"Marie-Danielle Leblanc has created her own signature style of artistic expression representative of her travels and inspired by nature," said Randal Wark, co-owner of Splurge Art Gallery. "We are thrilled and honored to be hosting Ms. Leblanc, with her "Landscapes and Vistas" collection, at Splurge and encourage all to meet the artist on November 18th."

Marie-Danielle Leblanc
Marie-Danielle Leblanc is a prolific painter, as the miles accumulate, she likes to write down her thoughts, make a note of the weather or the name of a place, take pictures and collect images. Leblanc's travel diary is an ideal instrument for her. Whether she is driving on the highway or in the open country, walking on never-ending beaches or rocks stroked by the sea, it is through her travels that the artist captures landscapes that stretch into the vista. No matter the time of day and whatever the weather or the season, Leblanc communicates to her viewers a taste for the outdoors and the open air.

November 18th, 2010 Event
Splurge Gallery invites you to "Landscapes & Vista" to see and enjoy how Leblanc transforms places into poetic worlds on a canvas. Leblanc loves to work with matter, her creativity leading to a never-ending fascination. Her work leads toward the creation of a bare space, a world that can be discovered and contemplated. She presents us with the result of a meditative process, the testimony of a new contemplation of the horizon.

David Salle to Speak at AFA ArtTalks

Tuesday, November 16, 6:30 p.m., at Christie's

The American Federation of Arts (AFA) is pleased to announce that artist David Salle is the second speaker in the 2010/11 ArtTalks series, to be held at Christie's on Tuesday, November 16, at 6:30 p.m. Following Salle's lecture, audience members are invited to participate in a question-and-answer session and a wine reception.

One of the most important painters to emerge at the end of the 1970s, David Salle helped define the postmodern sensibility by combining figuration with an extremely varied pictorial language. His work has been exhibited in more than 100 museums and galleries worldwide, including the Whitney Biennial, Documenta, the Venice Biennale, Carnegie International, the Paris Biennale, and most recently, The Pictures Generation at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As a painter whose work comes out of a tradition of installation and performance, Salle is a longtime collaborator with Karole Armitage, designing sets and costumes for more than twenty of her ballets and operas. Their collaborations have been staged at such venues as the Metropolitan Opera, the Joyce Theater, Paris Opera, Opera Comique, Opera Deutsche, Oper Berlin, and La Fenice.

Salle is represented in the collections of most modern art institutions, and solo exhibitions of his work have taken place at the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles; Castello di Rivioli; the Tel Aviv Museum; the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; the Guggenheim Bilbao; Haus der Kunst, Munich; Kestnergesellschaft, Hannover; and the Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig Wien.

Salle has contributed his writings on art to such publications as Artforum, Art in America, Flash Art, and Modern Painters, as well as to numerous exhibition catalogues and anthologies. He received a Guggenheim fellowship for theater design in 1986 and in 1995 directed the feature film Search & Destroy starring Griffin Dunne and Christopher Walken.

The ArtTalk will be held on Tuesday, November 16, 6:30 p.m., at Christie's, located at 20 Rockefeller Plaza, which is on 49th Street between Fifth and Sixth avenues. Following Salle's lecture, audience members are invited to participate in a question-and-answer session and a wine reception hosted by Christie's.

In-kind support for ArtTalks is provided by Christie's.

Admission is $15; $10 for AFA members and students with valid identification. Seating is limited and reservations are required. To purchase tickets online, click here or please call 212.988.7700 ext. 210.

Celebrating its 100th anniversary, the AFA is a nonprofit institution that organizes art exhibitions for presentation in museums around the world, publishes exhibition catalogues, and develops educational materials and programs. For more information, visit www.afaweb.org.

ABOUT NEAL ADAMS

"He revived Batman, saved the X-Men, challenged the system and changed comics forever." - Wizard Magazine
"Describe him in one word? Genius." - Joe Quesada, Editor in Chief, Marvel Comics

"He's a pivotal figure in the world of comics. He has positively altered the state, the ethical structure of the industry, and always for the better." - Harlan Ellison

"Adams transformed Batman into the sleek, brooding Dark Knight depicted onscreen for the past two decades." - Brian Lowry, Variety

"Who is the greatest living comic book artist? As I've said before, my vote is for Neal Adams"- Geoff Boucher, LA Times

Neal's had legendary 'runs' on Batman, X-Men, Green Lantern-Green Arrow and Deadman. Adams rescued Batman from his campy TV show, and transformed him into his present "Avenger of the Night." When people say 'modern Batman,' they mean Neal Adams' Batman. His run directly led to the realistic incarnation seen in Batman Returns, and the Dark Knight movies.

He godfathered a generation of new talent, brought down the comics code by introducing "relevant comics" and gave America its first black comic book superhero.
While fighting for creator's rights, he convinced publishers to return original art to its creators, improved standards of comic book production, forced publishers to pay royalties...and crusaded against work-made-for-hire in the copyright law. In addition, Neal has launched a successful production company - Continuity Studios - which produced the popular Nasonex Bee Campaign and introduced us to the concept of Motion Comics. He designed the popular Terminator, T2 4-D ride, and the Spider-man Rides at Universal Studios.

While setting-up his own characters with various Hollywood Studios and Producers, Neal is currently writing and drawing Batman Odyssey, for DC, a 12 issue series, and writing and drawing a 5 issue series of Wolverine for Marvel.
ABOUT ANIMAZING GALLERY | Since 1984, Animazing Gallery has showcased a unique collection of original and limited edition works, including animation, great American illustration art & fine art that indulges the senses and emotions with color, playfulness and beauty.
